Everyday of this school semester, I have worked to create a piece of work that can give someone a sense of who I am. I also wanted to explore more of who I am as a woman living in a politically motivated generation and what comparisons I can make to older generations. Using my favorite medium, I transformed myself into a different person and tried to imagine myself in their time period. Don’t need to say much else, except for, enjoy! Will post all photos separately but consecutively.
Since I was 12 years old I’ve been fascinated with makeup and its transformative potential. I remember sneaking into my mom’s makeup bag and wondering what look I would try that day. As I look back at my history with makeup, I remember exactly how each different look made me feel. If you show me a picture of a certain look I created, I can tell you what I did that day, how I felt, and what I wore. To this day, each time I put on a fresh face of makeup, I think about who I am that day and how I am going to represent myself. When I first thought of the idea for this project, my initial notion was to recreate different looks based on a certain era. As my project developed, I chose to represent specific women rather than their era. I decided to fully transform into these historical women with makeup and costume, as they were most recognizably portrayed. By doing research I could better understand the worlds these women inhabited and I began to find the connections amongst them. Researching helped me create the costume and develop a makeup look that represented the woman’s character, but with a contemporary and personal twist. As I got ready for each photo shoot, I found myself beginning to transform into an entirely different person. I could feel my mood instantly change. Once I was in front of the camera, it was show time.
